Ugadi/Yugadi means the beginning of the new age, it is a Hindu festival, celebrated in the south Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The festival marks the beginning of a new Hindu calendar year and is celebrated on the first day of “Chaitra” month, which falls in the months of March-April.
Temples, homes, and shops are decorated with flowers and mango leaves, especially the entrances. Making colourful floral patterns or rangolis in front of the houses is a common practice on the day.
Traditional rituals begin with oil-bath followed by prayers. Oil bath and eating Neem leaves (Bevu bella) are must rituals. The ingredients used in bevu bella symbolize different emotions/experiences – sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise. Having this on New Year’s Day signifies that we should accept all emotions and experiences with equanimity.
Family members dress up in new clothes and gather to worship and pray together on this day. Geet Vastra Nidhi has an Enchanting Collection of Sarees and Accessories to make your special days more special.
